By now you have probably heard that the sun is set for a spectacular solar eclipse in North America, and the internet is ablaze with speculation that we will see the most spectacular eclipse in the United States in over 70 years.
But as you may already know, this is simply not true.
While we can certainly expect the sun to pass through the Earth in this time of year, the sun will not be visible until at least around November 27, 2024.
And even then, there is no guarantee that you will see it.
“The sun will never be visible from the US until 2024,” the National Solar Observatory said in its announcement of the eclipse.
This means that, even if you live in the US, you will be unable to see the sun from anywhere in the world.
“If you live outside the US and have your own landline phone, then you may be able to see it through your own home and through the sky,” said James Green, senior lecturer at the University of California, Irvine.
“However, as it is not clear how the solar spectrum works in the Earth’s atmosphere, the Sun is not visible to the human eye.
So even if we could see the Sun from a distance, it would be very difficult to see where it would go.”
This means there is really no reason to plan to go to a solar event unless you really want to.
